31 Plays in 31 Days, #23 - “Culture Not Costumes”
I can’t take credit for this idea; this was based on a suggestion from Bernie. He’s just acquired a 3D printer, and he’s offered to make accessories for me to use when customizing dolls. Yesterday we made a cool wolf’s head cowl that I thought I could use for a “Red Riding Hood, wolf hunter” doll, and that’s what made him suggest doing something with Halloween costumes. It resulted in a pretty damn funny joke. 😆
This image is a little misleading, but I think the gag herein is better…

Day #23 - “Culture Not Costumes”
From Little Monsters
By Phoebe Roberts
DRACULAURA, a vampire girl
CLAWDEEN WOLF, a werewolf girl
~~~
(DRACULAURA waits in CLAWDEEN’s room.)
DRACULAURA: Aren’t you ready yet?
CLAWDEEN: (Off) Almost! Keep your fangs on…
DRACULAURA: Well, hurry it up. I want to see this Halloween costume you’re so psyched about.
CLAWDEEN: (Off) Okay, okay. But the real question is… are you ready?
(CLAWDEEN pokes her head out.)
DRACULAURA: What? Yes.
CLAWDEEN: Are you sure?
DRACULAURA: Yes!
CLAWDEEN: Are you really, really sure?
DRACULAURA: Come on!
(CLAWDEEN springs out in a vampire hunter costume, complete with stake and crucifix.)
CLAWDEEN: “I want you to believe...to believe in things that you cannot!”
DRACULAURA: Oh, my God. You. Racist.
CLAWDEEN: What? It’s funny!
DRACULAURA: No, it isn’t! You know my family history! Van Helsing committed unspeakable crimes against us.
CLAWDEEN: It’s just supposed to be a joke.
DRACULAURA: Well, I’m really glad you can laugh at my generational trauma. Some friend you are!
CLAWDEEN: Well… what were you going to wear to the party?
(Pause. DRACULAURA produces a red cape attached to a cowl made of a skinned wolf.)
DRACULAURA: …Little Red Riding Hood.
(Pause.)
DRACULAURA: Yeah, so. Shall we get going?
(She puts on the cape-cowl and they leave for the party.)
