A lot of people who are considered "Russian"--solely by virtue of being from countries that were once part of the Soviet Union--are ethnically anything but. Look at v_cat, for example, who probably looks a lot like your great-grandfather did. I wouldn't call her looks Asian so much as Persian, but the facial features are somewhat similar.
