I had a similar experience with Serpent's Spiral - my character had nothing (as far as I ever found out) to do with the supernatural part of the plot, and so once that took over attention, I was kind of at loose ends. I did manage to squeeze in a couple of personally important conversations, but you're right, it was hard for people to care when there was world-saving to be done.

You did, though, have a fabulous hat. :)
