The average person isn't stupid or bad, just... emotional, easy to mislead, and tends to vote from fear or anger. (My stepmother isn't stupid or bad either, she just has mood swings and hates Clinton, and was afraid of telling me.)
There's a lot of vitriol on both sides. Trump won because he had more support than the polls or the left realized, because openly supporting him meant being openly racist and homophobic. :(
I had been afraid of speaking up for a long because of this, but... this is exactly how democracies elect fascists. It's happened in much of the Middle East. America has never experienced a regime change or something this extreme before, it doesn't mean it's not a big deal.
Both the American left and the American right are very American-centered and not many people talked about foreign policy or the environment in this election.
I don't think LGBT issues should have been the forefront of this election (I'm queer, but would happily give up sex for eight years for the environment or global stability. So should any other white queer person.)
There's a lot to think about, and it's rather overwhelming.
