Interesting. I wouldn't have considered costumes quite from that angle, especially since I think we tend to underestimate how much people earlier in history were dressed not by their own choices but by whoever in their household took care of or even made their clothing.

I'm reminded of the Holmes story where he comments that a man's wife has clearly stopped loving him because she no longer brushes his hats.
