31 Plays in 31 Days, #19 - “Emotional Potluck”
Heh, this Dream Machine scene is mostly a lot of funny bits strung together. It doesn’t really have an arc or anything. But I like it anyway, as there are several good jokes in it— or at least, ones that will be good jokes once they get a bit of polishing.
This is for a planned Dream Machine episode 8– where shooting delays make it so nobody can travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, so Meredith tries to host a dinner to create a senes of solidarity among the whole grumpy team. It’s a chance to have the characters messing around instead of working and getting to know each other personally. Plus getting on each other’s nerves in a new way, since everybody’s grouchy and frustrated. :-D

This one occurs after last year’s #9 - “Friendsgiving” and #28 - “Extreme Rendition,” but before “Glorified Babysitters.”
Day #18 - “Emotional Potluck”
From Dream Machine:

INT. MEREDITH’S KITCHEN – DAY
Ryan appears in the crowded kitchen, looking intensely uncomfortable.
RYAN: Sorry I’m late. I didn’t want to come.
He unloads a bag clinking with bottles on the countertop.
MEREDITH: And yet you still brought something. How kind.
RYAN: I didn’t know what you were serving, so I brought an ‘84 Chateau Neuf, the 2011 Dom, a couple of 40’s, and a bag of Flaming Hot Cheetos.
MEREDITH: Wow, thank you. Can I… open the Cheetos for you?
RYAN: Spill a little in the glass, thanks.
INT. MEREDITH’S LIVING ROOM – DAY
Ryan enters and makes a beeline for a sofa, glumly crunching his Cheetos from a Solo cup.
LEAH: Damn it, you came.
RYAN: Hey, it wasn’t my idea.
LEAH: Eh, I just owe Meredith ten bucks now.
RYAN: Well, I brought a king’s ransom in booze, in case that’s consolation to anyone.
LEAH: You can’t even have any of that.
RYAN: No, but, just putting it out there, I’d like to watch someone have them at some point— preferably mixed together— in a soup bowl— if that’s cool.
Devon calls over his shoulder from where he is playing Xbox in front of the television.
DEVON: I’ll do it!
RYAN: Good man.
Derek enters carrying a covered dish, looking around the apartment.
DEREK: Front door was open, I let myself in, hope that’s cool.
RYAN: My hands were full. With angst for me, and booze for other people.
LEAH: Thanksgiving’s always an emotional potluck.
DEREK: Okay, then. I brought kugel and guilt from Mom’s— but then, I repeat myself. Kitchen’s where?
Ryan jerks his head. Derek heads in that direction but pauses at the sight of some strange abstract art on the walls. Meredith appears from the kitchen as he puzzles over it.
DEREK: I don’t get how the shapes are gay.
MEREDITH: (indignant) That’s very heteronormative of you.
She snatches the kugel from him and marches back into the kitchen.
