31 Plays in 31 Days, #21 - "Run"

So earlier this week, I got a very encouraging email from my producer contact! Bernie and I sent her our Hood pilot at the beginning of the month, and she read it right away and gave a very positive response! She not only really likes it, she thinks it has potential in the current market. I am ridiculously pleased, as our effort was to create something solid that was specifically commercial, and it looks like she thinks we succeeded. I am particularly encouraged by the fact that she told us she's sharing it around with colleagues; the more eyes on it, the more people can get behind it.

She asked us to write a show bible for it as our next step. That's our next important project, with the intention of getting it to her in the next two weeks. That means I'll be prioritizing that over scene generation until it's finished, so I may not have time to focus on new scenes. Of course I'll still be writing, so I'll just post Hood scenes that were an equivalent amount of work in its place.

Like today, I have focused myself on getting a good start into the bible. So I'm posting this scene of Robin and John from around the midpoint of the story. It takes place after all the Hood scenes posted up to this point except for Day #3 - Rich Boy Out of Water, which it comes a little bit before.

Day #21 - "Run"
From Hood Pilot

INT. PARKING GARAGE – NIGHT

John waits under the cold fluorescent lights. After a moment Robin appears and hurries over on the edge of panic.

ROBIN
You came.

JOHN
What are you doing, Robin?

ROBIN
I couldn’t… they’re watching the office, they’re monitoring my phone… I don’t know what’s going on, John. It’s insane.

JOHN
Jesus Christ.

ROBIN
They just started digging into everything, and I thought it would set them straight, but it’s not—

JOHN
Calm down, panicking won’t solve anything.

ROBIN
They’re closing in, John! They think I’m responsible!

JOHN
I know.

ROBIN
You know? Have you heard something?

JOHN
Nothing’s certain—

ROBIN
Oh, come on, you have people everywhere! What have you heard?

John sighs and then relents.

JOHN
It doesn’t look good, Robin.

ROBIN
What does that mean?

JOHN
It means this isn’t going away. They’re going to charge you.

ROBIN
No. No, this is— this is crazy! You know me, you’ve known me forever! I didn’t do this, I swear to God!

JOHN
Didn’t you? Are you sure?

ROBIN
What?

JOHN
What if it wasn’t something deliberate?

ROBIN
Jesus Christ, John!

JOHN
Come on, Robin, you and I both know you blow shit off! Be honest, could that have been it?

ROBIN
I have people for that!

JOHN
Oh, of course.

ROBIN
Good people! Even if I’m a screwup, that’s what they’re there for!

JOHN
Okay, okay.

ROBIN
Don’t you believe me?

JOHN
I believe you. I just don’t think anyone else will. They’ve got something on you, Rob. Something that’s going to put you away for a very long time.

ROBIN
I— I have lawyers. I’m a public figure, they won’t be able to—

JOHN
Come on. You practically leveled a working-class town. They want somebody to crucify for that.

Robin stares at him in horror.

ROBIN
Then… what do I do?

JOHN
I guess… you have a choice. You can let them put you away… or you can run.

ROBIN
Run? Like… go on the lam, are you serious?

JOHN
Don’t be melodramatic. I mean… go abroad for a little while, where nobody knows you, and lay low until things get straightened out.

ROBIN
But if I run, how will I ever clear my name?

JOHN
Let me take care of it. I’ll do everything I can to figure out what really went on, and you won’t have to sit in jail while I do it.

ROBIN
They’re watching my every move, they’re not going to let me just get a plane ticket.

JOHN
I’ll make the arrangements. I can get you out of the country quietly, without having to go through channels. You can wait it out on a beach in the Caribbean someplace. Nobody will even know.

ROBIN
You’d do that? You’re a better friend than I deserve.

JOHN
Ain’t that the truth.

Robin stands in torturous indecision.

JOHN
Until this is over, you’re going to lose everything, Robin. You can lose it in prison or out.

Robin takes off out of the garage. Once alone, John takes a deep breath, then pulls out his cell phone to make a call.

JOHN
Yeah, it’s settled. He’s going to run.
