Offended enough to post about it

This is a little thing, but it bugs me. I'm watching Iron Chef, and I just saw Bobby Flay accidentally scramble eggs in a beautiful piece of enamled cast-iron. What does he do with his mistake? He runs it over to a garbage can, trashes the whole thing, pot and all, and grabs a new one to start over in.

Now, I love Bobby 'cause he's a freaking rock star, but I was pretty outraged. That's probably a two or three hundred dollar Le Creuset Dutch oven! A gorgeous, useful piece of cookware that I'd love to own. If you're going to just throw it away, give it to me, dude. I'll happily cook in it, and when I do I'll tell my dinner guests, "This was used by Bobby Flay on Iron Chef once. I watched him ruin eggs in it."

Did it shatter? If it didn't, I'm pretty sure someone scavenged it out of the trash for re-use.

Or I would, anyway. >_>

It was cast-iron, so I hope it didn't!

And I totally would too.

So... I'm clueless. Why was it a mistake? Why would the eggs be ruined?

Oh, it was because he poured them into another mixture I think with the intent of making an egg foam. The pot was too hot, so the eggs curdled rather than integrated. Not a bad thing if you want scrambled eggs, but ruined if you wanted to make a foam. :-)

Aha! I thought there was some reason that eggs shouldn't be cooked in cast iron. Phew. Thank you.

First, Le Creuset isn't always that expensive. If you have as much of a yen for their products I do, they have an outlet store just a half hour south of you in Wrentham. Just saying.

Second, if it were any other show I think he might have taken the time to do something about it, off camera. That show has a serious time component though, and the trash might have been the only place he could put it where it would be out of the way and not used by anyone else.

Although, they must have dishwashers. And one of the things I -love, love, love- about enameled Le Creuset is that they are explicitly dishwasher safe.

(have I mentioned that I love Le Creuset?)

Really? There's an outlet? Ahhh! Must go! Thanks for the tip!
