Was is easier than is

Blows my mind how much easier it is to say "I was having a hard time," than to say "I am having a hard time." If it's been dealt with, overcome, it can be admitted to. But if it is not overcome, it is too shameful to say. Perhaps because the one implies that you have been strong, while the other implies that you are weak.
