I'm so sorry to hear that your mother is going through such a tough battle and that it's hitting you so hard. I hope things improve.

There are tests for a lot of types of genetic predisposition to cancer. I don't think you should be worried about developing lung cancer, but if it would ease your mind, talk to your doctor about what tests you could do. My understanding is that even if you have a predisposition, smoking makes it many, many times more likely. Don't smoke and you will be much safer.

Don't stop your life plans because you're afraid of a small possibility of hurting future children. Would you rather that your mother hadn't married? Would you rather that you hadn't gotten a chance at all the good things in your life just because some bad things could happen as well?

You are struggling with some tough things right now and it sounds like you really need someone objective to talk to. Please see if you can find a counselor or therapist to trust. It's good to be open with your friends and having someone who's outside the situation can be even better. They can give you perspective that you know isn't clouded by love the way your friends and family may be.
