The problem with the moving bits was that their design was finalized fairly late in the game, because before the BPA grant was guaranteed, we weren't sure we could afford them. So when Bernie and Jenna and I were toying with ideas for the set, we had to allow for a lot of variables in what would end up being possible. Bernie gave us a design based on my early sketches and we sort of went from there. I liked the platform in back because it gave you the option of either having the two sets of platforms bridged, or having them open in back so that people could exit that way.
The front trundle didn't do much, I agree. I originally wanted it to be a double trundle; to have a platform that slid out that then had another platform slide out of that one, which would have been more dramatic, but it didn't work out.
I do hope that future directors will continue to push the boundaries, though. (Especially since now we know just how much the other theater companies inflate their budgets, maybe we can push that boundary as well...)
