I think all people, not just men, see attractiveness in others in broad strokes. I have to remind myself frequently that nobody sees our imperfections as much as ourselves. In fact, one of my truisms of life is "no one cares as much about you as you do."
But in general I agree with your assessment that beauty is much more rarely equated with value in men.
I also think of the conversation we had at FantasyCraft the other night, where I was mentioning that some of Matt's things smelled of the perfume he was wearing, and Bernie jumped to the conclusion that men shouldn't wear perfume :)
