There are cases in the real world where two people of opposite genders care about each other and their pain and struggles affect each other. The important thing isn't that you avoid having a man who's affected by the pain of a woman, it's that you portray the people involved as people. I can think of at least one case where a couple I'm friends with suffered a very traumatic event (a miscarriage) and went through all sorts of upheaval as they both came to terms with it separately and as well as together.

Try not to get so focused on the story you're telling about one person's struggles that you forget about the relationships and the other people who are around them, and I think you'll be ok.
