This is part of what I would like to turn into a full-length novel someday. Goran is a werewolf who's got his own set of problems that Julien is going to try to help with (poor little priest has so much on his plate!) Braden is the lay headmaster of the college of St. Michael's, who has never been terribly happy about Gabriel's presence but trusts his old friend and colleague Sister Magdalena Valeria, who has taken the responsibility of raising and teaching him. Both of these characters will be explored more in the fuller story.
And yeah, you're right, I was worried about the exposition level. I guess what I was thinking was a lot of this stuff about Gabriel would have already been established for the reader in earlier parts of the story, and the way that info is delivered here is supposed to represent Julien's new understanding of it without doing too much rehashing for an audience that's already observed it firsthand. But it's still a little clunky.
