Russia, the most racist country i ahve ever encounteredin my life, at least in the 1980s (can not speak for long ago but i can not imagine it being BETTER) was very well versed in denegrating its asian and darker citizens. The further east you go, you hit hte Caucases, and you see folks who look asian. They were never from what i had seen, seen as equall to the folks who looked european and were decendents from the Viking Rus.

Growing up in Moscow, among mainly russian jews, the fact that americans seem to think of Jews as dark skinned/haired etc is odd to me. JEws are blond, with blue eyes, like most russians. they have last names that do not conjugate the same way russian last names do, but they look similar enough that one can hide it. It is why it was in my passport.

i find the anthropology of digging back to see how others saw themselves fascinating. did htey identify as a thing, or really want others to see them this way? were they proud or hiding? immigration makes it fascinating.

i am a 0 generation american, i was not born here. This has never prevented people from assuming that because i look white my family is rich and powerful and so on. it is... amusing.
