The other night I went for a run in the graveyard. I often walk into town to do errands as a way to get some extra exercise, but I don't often just go out and run for running's sake. But I was feeling lousy and hadn't worked out that day, so I thought the exertion might make me feel better. It might not have been the safest idea, as it was very dark out by that point and I don't see well in the dark. But there was nobody else around and I stuck to the paths I know best. I started running when I got to the entrance gate on the road by Brandeis-Roberts, and I ran all the way to the exit onto Prospect street and back.

I work out a lot, but it rarely takes the form of running outside, as I'm extremely prone to side stickers. I don't know if it's not enough water or not enough protein or not breathing right or what. I usually go on a treadmill or elliptical in the gym. But I felt weirdly powerful doing it. It wasn't until I was already on the return trip that I actually started to get tired. I'm not sure of the total distance, but I'd guess it was at least a mile and a half. Though the usual side sticker did show up, I was able to push through it, and made it all the way back to the gate. As I said, I rarely run for distance as a form of exercise, so I wasn't entirely sure I'd even be able to do it. But I was pleased and proud to find that I could.

The ability to take on any physical challenge that might arise to me is one of my strongest motivations for working out so much. I don't ever want to be helpless, or overmatched. I want to always be able to do anything I might need to do. So it feels good to know that I attempted something and found it wasn't out of my capability.

I might do this more often. Though hopefully I can get to it before it gets too dark.
