Yesterday turned out to be a very nice day. Got a call late in the workday from Sheena saying that Alex wanted to take us kayaking, did I want to come? I confess, at first I was pretty nervous. I've never been kayaking before, so I was afraid of cold water, or of overturning the thing and getting stuck underneath it. But it turned out that the river was exceptionally warm, warmer even than Sheena's swimming pool was, and one pops out of a kayak too easily to get stuck in it if you do flip it. It took me a while to get the hang of how to paddle, but with practice and Alex's instruction I felt pretty comfortable, and could move along at a good pace. We even stopped in some deep water where Dave and I hopped out to swim. I enjoyed floating around in my life vest in the warm water. We even saw a gorgeous family of swans, two beautiful parents and their still-downy, ugly but growing babies. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey. It was very refreshing in this hot weather, a chance to look at some beautiful scenery that made you forget you were in the middle of a city, and some excellent exercise for the arms and core. I was impressed with how well I kept up; I was expecting to become exhausted quickly, but I found myself very up to the challenge. Alex was wonderful for taking us, I had an amazing time.

Afterward was conversation and Chinese food at Elsinore. Alex said if we had gone out earlier we could have gone all the way to Moody Street for dinner, but we didn't have time before the place closed. We were all pretty tired by this point, so we just ordered in. I was still in my swimsuit and probably should have changed, but I was more comfortable than I'd been all week in this heat, so I just didn't bother and enjoyed feeling cool for a little bit. A good conclusion to our little adventure.

Later that evening, who came wandering by the house but Ernest! It was very nice to see him. We gave him a grand tour of the house, and he played some Smash with us. Hopefully we'll have him by more often. After that, I went crashy-crashy and went to bed. I miss my nightly ritual of talking to Jared before I go to sleep, but he's not back from Canada yet.

I just managed to secure the Thursday of July 3rd off to visit Jared. My boss Myrna is awesome. Now all I have to do is get permission to leave early next Friday to pick up Jared at the airport. The logistics of that are still something I'll have to figure out, as I do not at the moment have a car. But I will make this work one way or the other. Eight more days until he comes.
