That is very true. My touchstone for the character lately has been more the MCU version, which has had it assumed as an undertone for his whole life. While the MCU never addressed his alcoholism as such, the fact that they have him as an obviously addictive personality that has been self-medicating one way or another forever still gives that indication that even pre-IM1, he had self-loathing that he wasn't dealing with.
