Oo, I like this. I always appreciate these kinds of analyses, because while I have a strong theatrical and writing background and of course some literature, I wasn't an English major and often am not thinking of these things in such an analytical way.

That being said, whenever I'm in a show - or especially, when I'm directing - I'm thinking about these things very consciously, just not with this wording. Now that I have it, I'm more likely to use it when thinking about this stuff.

(It also reminds me of a common complaint I hear about players from the persepctive of a GM in tabletop roleplaying games. Certain kinds of players are more interested in "what their character would do" than in serving the larger story that the group is attempting to tell together. With a story structure that allows for improvisation and player choice, the choices characters make can be like those costume choices: am I doing this because it's what I think I would do, or because it signifies something larger?)
