Another scene from the story about the little girl with the aunt who’s a witch, while I work on a harder scene to crack.

Day #22 - “Fisherman’s Cave”
GWEN, a tween who lives with her aunt
SANDRA, a mysterious woman she doesn’t know
Early 2000’s, Cape Cod
~~~
(GWEN sits in her garden, hands pressed into her eyes to keep from crying. SANDRA approaches in a big coat and stylish boots, a bit too heavy and dressy for the milieu.)
SANDRA: Rough day?
(GWEN looks up.)
SANDRA: You okay?
GWEN: Yeah. It’s nothing.
SANDRA: Yeah. Bet it wasn’t. But you’re tough, aren’t you? Illegitimi non carborundum sunt.
GWEN: Sorry?
SANDRA: It means “don’t let the bastards wear you down.”
GWEN: (Giggles)
SANDRA: So. You know the way around here?
GWEN: Kind of… what are you doing?
SANDRA: I’m looking for the shore. I thought it was near here? But I guess I got a little lost. Can you tell me the way?
(GWEN points.)
GWEN: There’s a gravel path that goes through the dunes. Follow it as far as it goes, and you’ll get to the beach.
(SANDRA looks that way, then nods and frowns as if impressed.)
SANDRA: Huh. Thanks, kid. You know what you’re doing, don’t you?
(GWEN looks down, pleased.)
GWEN: I don’t know, I guess so.
(GWEN looks at the big coat SANDRA is wearing.)
GWEN: Probably too cold to go swimming this time of year.
SANDRA: I’m just going for a walk. I’ve heard there’s an old fisherman’s cave that’s pretty cool.
GWEN: Fisherman’s cave?
SANDRA: Yeah. A cave where the lobstermen used to keep their boats and pots and things. Supposed to have some cool old stuff in it. You never head off it?
GWEN: No.
SANDRA: Even though you live around here? Huh. Well, maybe you should check it out too sometime. Can’t leave all the fun to the tourists. Well, see you around, friend. Thanks for the directions.
(She exits down the path GWEN indicated.)
