Bleh, another Mrs. Hawking 7 scene I probably wouldn’t have posted if I weren’t still trying to finish the draft. And get ready for the new semester, which is starting this coming week. I am feeling behind— there’s not a ton of work left to do to finish either task, but I’m battling a few specific sticking points I’m having a tough time solving.

Anyway, this is a bit spoilery for the end of Hawking 7. I’ve broken the scene into sections and this is the first one. There’s like, two more parts, though I will probably not post all of it anyway for fear of giving away more than I like to in this challenge.

Day #25 - “Dangerous and Unwell”
From the Mrs. Hawking series
By Phoebe Roberts

London, England, 1890

VICTORIA HAWKING, lady’s champion of London, early fifties
NATHANIEL HAWKING, her nephew and right hand man, mid thirties
CLARA HAWKING, his lady wife, late thirties
MIRANDA BARRYMORE, Mrs. Frost’s gentlewoman daughter, late twenties
~~~
(Mrs. Hawking’s parlor, where MRS. HAWKING and CLARA wait. NATHANIEL leads in MIRANDA.)
NATHANIEL: Mrs. Barrymore. Please come in.
MIRANDA: Thank you for having me, sir. I can’t explain how grateful I am.
NATHANIEL: Of course. You must forgive us for… struggling with how to speak to you. As you’ll see, it’s not an easy thing to discuss.
MIRANDA: Anything you can tell me, anything at all, is more than I have.
NATHANIEL: (to MRS. HAWKING) Madam?
(Pause.)
MRS. HAWKING: Mrs. Barrymore, your mother was not… like other people. She was… brilliant, and talented, and capable of far more than the world ever credited. But that made her angry… and that anger made her unwell.
MIRANDA: Unwell… how?
CLARA: Enough to make her dangerous.
MIRANDA: Dangerous?
MRS. HAWKING: To herself, and to everyone around her. To the point that… there was nothing else that could be done for her, but to put her in a place where she could no longer harm anyone.
MIRANDA: She… harmed people?
MRS. HAWKING: Do you doubt it?
(Pause.)
MIRANDA: No. I don’t.
(Pause.)
MIRANDA: And… you were the one that did it? You were the one that put her in there?
MRS. HAWKING: I was.
MIRANDA: And how did it come to be you? Were you her friend? Or… did she hurt you too?
MRS. HAWKING: I was her friend. And she did.
