Day #11 - "No One Can Hear You Scream”

Leah Lucchesi, head writer of the “Offcomer” series, mid-thirties
Meryl Dresden, Ryan’s daughter, early twenties
Nate Reyes, grip at Dream Machine, mid-thirties
(The elevator kerchunks to a stop. They stare at each other.)
MERYL: That’s not what a floor sounds like around here, is it?
(Leah presses the call button.)
LEAH: Uh, hello? Maintenance? We’re in the west elevator and it just stopped with a really concerning sound.
NATE: (Over the intercom) Hey, Leah? That you in there?
LEAH: Nate?
NATE: Yeah, looks like there’s a malfunction in the gear system.
LEAH: Okay, so un-malfunction it! You’re a techie, make the technology go.
NATE: Oh, I’m sorry, I’m just the guy who carries thing from one place to another. Right?
LEAH: How many times do I got to scourge myself for that, dude?
NATE: I’m also not an elevator operator! We had to call the company. You’re just going to have to sit tight for a while.
MERYL: How long?
NATE: Don’t know. But the company says our business needs are very important to them.
LEAH: Uh oh.
MERYL: Um… I’m in a little bit of a hurry.
LEAH: Yeah, Nate, the plants are going to run away if Miss Botanist can’t get out of here in time.
MERYL: It’s actually pretty important.
LEAH: Yeah, I get it— I don’t want to be stuck in a box with you either.
MERYL: Yeah, that’s the problem. Somebody else doesn’t want to be stuck in here either— and I have no control over when he’s coming out.
LEAH: What? Wait— you mean…?
MERYL: Yeah. I’ve been having contractions since breakfast.
(LEAH slams on the call button.)
LEAH: Nate, old buddy, old pal, if you don’t get me out of here now, I am going to lose it! Worse than when they killed Matthew on Downton Abbey!
NATE: Sorry, miss. In this place, no one can hear you scream.
CUT TO: the grainy feed on the security camera in the elevator, where Leah is soundlessly screaming.
