to make pony tails stick straight out I've found that it works better if they are two braids. You can get a wire (the color of your hair) at a craft store and work it into the braid after you have them so that it makes them stick straight out. A medium soft wire will allow the hold to be there but if someone bumps into it will bend so you don't poke someone's eye out. If you really wanted pony tails you could put a second ponytail holder on the end of each pony tail and attach the end of each wire (hidden inside the ponytails) to the second ponytail holder.
Just a thought. It has worked for me back when I had long hair. :-)
