While I do agree that first impressions are important, and that one should always make an effort to come off well, I also believe that there are extenuating factors to be considered. For example, I know that I've grown up a great deal in the last four years or so - I dislike the idea of anyone judging me based on an impression of who I was in my freshman year of college, because I believe that in many ways, I am a very different person now.
So, while I do believe one should put effort into a first impression, I also think it's important to take age and maturity level into some kind of account, especially for people one has associated with for a long time. To be honest, I say this largely because I think there are still people who judge me based on years old impressions, and I wish they'd give me a second chance, to prove I've grown up a bit as a person.
