While I'm sure top scientists have enough to do with building rockets and finding a cure for cancer and all that, I must say that strapless bra technology could use a little work. I dug mine out to wear with my Clockwork Cafe costume because I strongly believe in non-visible undergarments, so for the the cut of my Chinese dress a bra with straps would not do. But upon putting it on, I had had to say I was not terribly impressed. Granted, mine is quite a few years old by this point, so maybe design improvements have recently been made, but having to hike it up as high as possible just to get it to do its job did not speak of sophisticated design. It sort of settled onto me eventually and worked passibly well, but I can only imagine how tough it is for girls who actually have anything more substantial on top; they must be totally out of luck. Anyone have any recommendations for a decent strapless bra?

Vicky's secret made a decent convertable bra. IE there were like 3/4 ways you could wear it but when I tried it on last year it was wicked expensive. Maybe now that it isn't so new the price has gone down. It was decently comfortable. I don't know how much "support" it gives as I haven't anything to really support, but it was comfortable enough.

I own one of those. The convertible aspects were great, and I found no loss of support that way, but as a strapless bra, it offers me no support at all.

It's possible I just need a new strapless bra, but I'll admit that when I have had strappy or shoulderbaring garments to wear, I've been faking it with clear brastraps that are obvious and kind of tacky looking. I've tried to stick to things I can at least wear the bra in halter format with, but I have a fancy dinner coming up at the end of the month, and my dress has the teeniest tiniest black ribbon straps and I guess I have to do a lot of looking for a good strapless bra between now and then.

I'm just annoyed because I don't plan to stay this weight, so I really hate dropping money on expensive clothes that I won't be able to wear later.

Strapless bras are terrible and I hate them. That being said, I am a fan of the convertible bra. They don't all function well once you remove the straps, and they never function as well as they do with straps, but if you try enough convertible bras you will eventually find one that Doesn't Suck enough that you deem it likeable.

Here is what I really hate about strapless bras and how I get around it, weird as it may be. The thing I hate is that there seem to be two kinds: the kind with some kind of elastic on top that ruins your shape, and the kind without top-elastic that falls down your body. My convertible bra has no top-elastic, because top-elastic makes me angry. So instead what I've been doing to make sure I'm not pulling it back into place all day long is to take the side-loops (the ones you use to hang the shirt with) and sort of wrapping them around the sides of the bra, that way it stays up. :) I felt really clever. It's probably really odd though.

I've heard this complaint many times hanging around with the 'dolls. One of them mentioned something like a 'demi-corset' for the more... endowed...

Grr, I hate strapless bras. I go without whenever possible (which does happen, occasionally). Otherwise, the best strapless bra I've ever been able to find was at Target, actually. Their bras never fit me, so I was quite surprised. It's still sub-optimal, though.

I avoided strapless bras for as long as I possibly could until I finally acknowledged that I needed one for certain costumes. After a rather long search that involved trying on a lot of bras, I finally bought a Victoria's Secret with the removable straps. It also has a strip of sort of clear rubber on the inside that provides a bit of friction against your skin so that it slides less. It's far from perfect, but better than the alternatives. VS stuff is expensive, but I find their stuff lasts longer than other brands I own.
