It is kind of amazing how so simple a dress can look so structural, isn't it? I'd argue that her skin color doesn't complement it--I feel like it work would better on someone darker skinned or haired. But I've never been accused of having taste, so I am probably wrong :)
I know so little about sewing knits... but it seems to me you'd want something like a heavy jersey to work with. I'm not sure how you'd line something like that--do they make knit linings?--so if you're going to use a single layer, it isn't see through.
I should really start learning more about knits...
