Top ten percent, but no further :-(

I found out last week, to my great disappointment, that Adonis did not progress past the top ten percent of the Bluecat Screenwriting Contest. I know it's an achievement even to get that far, but I was really hoping that maybe these contest I'm entering would be helpful in getting my screenplays out there. Since I don't really know any other real way to do it, it places more weight on the few avenues I can think of.
The fact that the film industry is basically either Hollywood or bust makes it especially difficult. Particularly with a piece like Adonis, which would need a hundred million dollar budget in order to be made. I just don't really know any good way, besides these contests that offer industry leads as prizes, to get the attention of anyone who could possibly help it see production.
nennivian asked me recently if I'd considered having a staged reading of it. Honestly I'd love to do something like that-- I really do believe it's my best piece, so I want to expose as many people to it as possible --but the problem of getting anyone to come who could possibly help it along remains. Turning it over in my mind, I wondered about what if I made a real... SOCIAL event of it, what that might mean. Like, rented out a real party venue to hold the reading in. Had a cocktail hour before it, served hors d'oeuvres and wine. Had a fancy dress code. Found some way to send out invitations to people other than just my friends. Maybe targeted groups, academic and the like, focused on classics and history, for the way it deals with epic storytelling tropes, or gender and sexuality groups, given how it inverts traditional hetero sexual dynamics. Maybe advertised in targeted periodicals. Made it seem like a real party, something important, so that maybe somebody with a little more clout than the people I already know would see it and get interested in it. And then put together a really good staged reading, to show the script off to advantage.
It wouldn't be cheap, certainly. And probably wouldn't work anyway. But I need to figure out something, or else the script will never get anywhere.
Sigh. Back to the drawing board, I guess.
