31 Plays in 31 Days, #30 - "Out of Place"
Aug. 30th, 2017 08:06 pmThis isn't from any particular place in the timeline. Just an attempt at a funny scene I pulled out of nowhere in my push to finish.
Day #30 - "Out of Place"
By Phoebe Roberts
MARY STONE, apprentice society avenger
NATHANIEL HAWKING, her partner
~~~
(MARY enters, dressed like an upperclass lady. NATHANIEL laughs.)
MARY: Do I look ridiculous?
NATHANIEL: No, not at all!
MARY: Then why are you laughing at me?
NATHANIEL: Not at you! It’s only I don’t often see you dressed up like this.
MARY: Well, I’m have to, if I’m to look like I belong in a place like that.
NATHANIEL: Well, you may get a second look or two, but not because you don’t belong.
MARY: Well, thank you. If that was a compliment; I must say I’m not sure.
NATHANIEL: It was intended so. You’ll reflect well on me, at least.
MARY: So what’s our story, then?
NATHANIEL: We’re a respectable married couple looking into the property, who’s very curious about all the business and history of the place.
MARY: We’re married?
NATHANIEL: (Laughing) There’s no other way we can go in together.
MARY: Oh, goodness.
NATHANIEL: Not to worry, I’m a very good companion. My real wife can vouch for me! Shall we get her on the line?
MARY: Nathaniel!
NATHANIEL: Never fear, darling, I’ll be a perfect gentleman. You shan’t even have to banish me to the dressing room, I’ll go myself.
MARY: This is very funny to you, isn’t it?
NATHANIEL: Isn’t it?
MARY: Not to me!
NATHANIEL: Why not?
MARY: Because… now I’ll be all on pins and needles. Over whether my manners are wrong or… my accent’s too coarse, or any number of reasons why I’ll look on odd on your arm.
NATHANIEL: Oh, Mary.
MARY: You don’t think of these things, because you don’t have to. Nobody ever thinks you’re out of place.
NATHANIEL: Mary, you’ve manage to make a place where no one else on earth has ever— in Mrs. Hawking’s life. If you can find a way to fit in there, you can fit in anywhere.
MARY: Even playing your wife?
NATHANIEL: Oh, just do as Clara as does. Boss me around, tease me relentlessly, and keep me in line. Do you think you can do that?
MARY: I think I can manage that much.
NATHANIEL: Then you’ll do just fine.
