31 Plays in 31 Days, #27 – “Competitive”

Another silly, underdeveloped bit for the Thanksgiving episode of Dream Machine that has the potential to be really funny. I thought it might be amusing if, by confusing addresses, Meredith’s cousin Zach shows up early when he was supposed to be coming by just for dinner. But he’s earning a little extra cash as a stripper, so he comes to Meredith’s for the gig and it’s very embarrassing. And then Devon starts getting competitive with him over his workout and his physical prowess. You can imagine how Leah and Meredith might react.

Needs polishing! But I think the idea is hilarious.

DEVON CHAMBERS, male lead actor in Offcomer at Dream Machine, early thirties
ZACH BARRY, Meredith’s younger cousin, who moonlights as a stripper, mid twenties

Devon puts up his shoulders aggressively as Zach side-eyes him uncomfortably.

DEVON: You’re not so special.

ZACH: Uh, okay.

DEVON: What was that, that— snake move with your abs? Big deal, anybody can do that.

Devon strips off his shirt and imitates the move.

MEREDITH: What even is happening?

LEAH: I don’t know but I’m into it.

DEVON: So, what do you do? Pilates? CrossFit?

ZACH: Uh, I’m kind of into lacrosse.

DEVON: Yeah, yeah. I do interval training three times a week, it’s brutal. Alternated with burnouts— do you think you could keep up with that?

ZACH: What? I don’t know, who cares?

DEVON: Oh, you think you’re better than me?

LEAH: You should fight him!

MEREDITH: Not in my living room! Take it outside!

ZACH: I don’t want to fight anybody!

DEVON: Fine, we’ll do this the hard way. Show me what you got.

ZACH: What?

DEVON: Show me your moves! I’ll match you grind for grind.

ZACH: Uh…

LEAH: Yeah, Zach! Show him your moves!

ZACH: Look, it’s not that big a deal— it’s not that hard—

LEAH: You going to take that, Devon?

DEVON: Hell, no!

He gets up in Zach’s grill and starts dancing.

DEVON: Can you beat that? Huh?

ZACH: Jesus Christ.

LEAH: Now kiss!

ZACH: Uh, I don’t do that?

LEAH: What? What kind of entertainer are you?

ZACH: Not that kind! And besides, I’m straight.

LEAH: UGH, even better!

ZACH: That makes a difference!?

LEAH: If I have to explain, you will never get it!

MEREDITH: That’s enough out of you! Stop harassing my cousin— both of you! Devon! Put that away— put all that away!

Meredith starts dragging Leah away.

LEAH: Nooooo! This is my dream and you’re wrecking it!
