My dad's in town for work again this week, so I went out to dinner with him yesterday. When he arrived, he brought us a cooler full of vegetables all freshly picked and perfect from his garden-- tomatoes and cherry tomatoes, onions, lettuce, beets, basil, squash, cucumbers, new potatoes, three kinds of peppers. A ton of everything, probably more than we can use before it's no good anymore. But it all looks fantastic. My dad's garden really is his pride and joy lately. Apparently my mom and dad don't buy anything at the grocery store except meat and fish, olives and olive oil, cheese, and garlic and pine nuts to make pesto. Everything else comes from the garden.
Hmm. Maybe I can make something out of all this stuff and serve it at BSCF or something. Not sure what that could be, but there's so much of it, and it's so nice it needs to be enjoyed. That is, if I'm at BSCF. I'm not sure when my dad is going home, so I might be spending Thursday evening with him. I'd consider inviting him to to hang out with us, as he's a pretty cool guy, but he's not exactly the gamer type so I'm not sure he'd be interested.
In addition to the TUB of pesto my mom packed for us, she also sent all the fixing to make more in with the enormous bag of basil. Being Italian, my family goes through that stuff by the barrel, and we put it on everything. It is, truly, terrifyingly delicious. Perhaps I'll set out the tub for people to eat now, and make another batch this weekend for when Jared and his family get in. I know he really likes it, and it'd be a nice thing to greet them when they arrive with a delicious homemade snack. That should be nice. I think I'll do that.
