Maybe I have a different view of it than you, but I always sort of assumed most slashers didn't take it that seriously.

... okay, I can't even say that with a straight face. There are many slashers who take it way more seriously than I do, and have some sort of idea that they are "HOMG CHAMPIONS FOR TEH GHEIS" just because they write some man/man pr0n.

It's worth noting that in _many_ of the myriad of Marvel comics containing the two, their relationships is portrayed as far more loving and intimate than it is even in the Avengers movie. It's pretty much just on the other side of 'explicitly canon'.
