Chores this week

Got up early this morning to join the rest of the family in the oh-so-fun yearly summer ritual known as Staining the Deck. We just spent several hours painting a waterproof stain on the deck in the backyard, early so as to finish before it got too hot. It’s a lousy job, but it’s got to get done. The story goes that the first time we did this years ago, it was a bigger job than my dad thought it would be, especially since Casey and I were a little too young to be of all that much help. So the next year he hired some workmen to do it. They ended up killing half the plants around the deck, including a beautiful pumpkin vine with two nice pumpkins on it, and didn’t end up doing all that great a job anyway. My dad was really annoyed, reasoning that if his two little kids could do better than paid workers, he was never paying a crew to do it again. So every year, we get dragged out early one summer morning to paint the goddamn deck. 

Reminds me of my internship, with all the home maintenance work it involves.

 

I believe this week I shall experiment with making a red velvet cake. My mom found a recipe for it that sounds absolutely delicious. It looks pretty difficult, and making cakes from scratch isn’t easy anyway, but still, I’d like to give it a try. If it turns out I can manage it, it might be fun to make for parties and stuff. I’ve got more than a few friends who are also fans of red velvet.

 

Also this week I need to get my stuff packed and rent a moving van for getting it to Waltham. Shouldn't be hard, most of it wasn't even unpacked since I got it home, but some of the larger things, like the couches I'm bringing, I'll have to figure out how to get things together.
