This one is fun because I actually have an audio recording of it! Today I posted the scene as performed by Jeremiah O'Sullivan and Christian Krenek, as Nathaniel and Justin respectively, to the Mrs. Hawking website. They did an adorable job performing it, so I'm going to refer you over there to listen to it.

On Mrshawking.com: "New audio recording - "Last Night Before"

Base Instruments 2018-121

This piece is another bit from earlier in the Hawking timeline, with Nathaniel and Justin celebrating at the end of a stag night just before Nathaniel's wedding. It comes out funny and touching at once, which is what I always go for with these two characters. I highly recommend listening to the recording, as the actors knock it out of the park.

Day #17 - "Last Night Before"
From Mrs. Hawking
By Phoebe Roberts

NATHANIEL HAWKING, a groom-to-be, early twenties
JUSTIN HAWKING, his older brother, mid twenties

London, England, 1876 - the tail end of a stag party

JUSTIN: What do you say? One more?

NATHANIEL: That's quite enough for me. They'll expect me upright tomorrow.

JUSTIN: But we're celebrating! Come now— on your last free night on earth?

NATHANIEL: Well. Perhaps one more for courage.

JUSTIN: In that case, to the man who, having done everything he meant to do, walks fearless to the hangman's noose!

NATHANIEL: And to the brother who, with every word and deed, makes me surer of my choice.

JUSTIN: Cheers. So you're happy, then?

NATHANIEL: I'm mad for her.

JUSTIN: Congratulations, old boy. Look at you. My little brother about to be married. I remember you when you were bounding about on your hobby horse.

NATHANIEL: And I remember you knocking me down so you could steal it off me.

JUSTIN: You got me back. I still have the scars from the bite marks. Fair warning, I plan to show them in my toast.

NATHANIEL: (laughs)

JUSTIN: Then I suppose you ought to call it a night. If you’re no good tomorrow after carousing with me, I’ll never hear the end of it.

NATHANIEL: There’s just one thing I wanted to ask you, before I turn in. If— if you could give me some advice.

JUSTIN: About what?

NATHANIEL: About tomorrow.

JUSTIN: I'm the last person to tell you anything about marriage.

NATHANIEL: No, I mean... for the night after.

JUSTIN: Really?

NATHANIEL: Well, you’re supposed to be the ladies’ man, aren’t you?

JUSTIN: Is that what they say about me?

NATHANIEL: That’s what you say about you. But perhaps you’re all talk.

JUSTIN: I assure you, little brother, the talking's where I'm only just getting started.

NATHANIEL: Good God, Justin, must you? This is hard enough.

JUSTIN: Forgive me. I’m a little surprised that you ask, is all.

NATHANIEL: Well, who else would I ask?

JUSTIN: But you mean to say... you don't know?

NATHANIEL: For heaven's sake.

JUSTIN: Surely not.

NATHANIEL: Not everybody’s like you, Justin.

JUSTIN: That’s certain. But— there's been a girl or two, hasn't there?

NATHANIEL: I'm a gentleman. You ought to try it sometime.

JUSTIN: (conspiratorial) Even since Clara?

NATHANIEL: Yes! For— the most part.

JUSTIN: What’s the rest?

NATHANIEL: (prim) None of your affair.

JUSTIN: Oh, now you’re shy?

NATHANIEL: By Jove! I knew you'd be a prat about this.

JUSTIN: So why did you ask me, then?

NATHANIEL: Because you're my big brother. If I can't go to you, then who can I? And... girls do talk about you, you know. So I thought you would be the one to know it. And to know, well…

JUSTIN: Well, what?

NATHANIEL: Clara.

JUSTIN: Oh.

(Pause.)

JUSTIN: Is that what you think?

NATHANIEL: (pointed) I don’t think anything about that.

JUSTIN: (almost to himself) No, I don't imagine you would.

NATHANIEL: Like I said... I am mad about her. More than anything, I want to make her happy. I'm not like you, Justin, I never wanted to— go through girls like handkerchiefs.

JUSTIN: Here, now.

NATHANIEL: That is to say— Clara's the one for me. So I've worked so hard to be the right man for her... the man she deserves. I'd hate to think, in this respect, I... wouldn't measure up. So... can you let me in on a trick or two? Something you know, to do right by her?

(Pause.)

JUSTIN: No.

NATHANIEL: You don’t need to tell me anything that— isn't my business—

JUSTIN: No, not that. I mean I’m not going to teach you my tricks.

NATHANIEL: Oh, come now.

JUSTIN: No. Nathaniel... you can't go to her like me. If that’s what Clara wanted… she would have had it.

NATHANIEL: I suppose that’s true.

JUSTIN: You're right, you're not like me— you're right for her. You needn’t worry whether you measure up. I'd say she's made that clear.

NATHANIEL: Still… I was hoping you might tell me something. I don’t want to disappoint.

JUSTIN: I said no tricks. But that doesn’t mean I can’t tell you a thing or two. Something even a delicate soul like you might manage.

NATHANIEL: What does that mean?

JUSTIN: Pour yourself just a drop or so more. It'll brace you.

NATHANIEL: I am going to be terribly sorry I asked, aren't I?

JUSTIN: Or else thanking me when the honeymoon's over. Clara certainly will be.

NATHANIEL: Oh, God.

JUSTIN: Like I said. If I let you go home no good for tomorrow, I'll never forgive myself.
