I had an interesting dream last night that for some reason intrigues me. I'm going to work it out here and see what I get from it.

These are the elements that were in the dream. It was about a wealthy woman, probably in her fifties, whose name I think was Leona. She is a good-looking older lady, old-fashioned, unfailingly sweet and unimposing, a combination of grandmotherliness and high society. She is married to an important businessman and they are extremely well-off. Her husband works a lot, but Leona herself doesn't work. I can't remember why; she might have been retired, or the nominal head of something, or have never worked at all. They have children but they're grown and off living their own lives. Leona is the type to be cheerful all the time, but she's finding that she has so little to do anymore that she's beginning to grow bored. As a result of this, she starts to grow more and more interested in what those close to her begin to politely call "theater of living." In polite terms, this is the idea that there is nothing so interesting as the unfolding of people's lives. In more honest terms, it's becoming very nosy and going out of your way to pay attention to things that aren't your business. In an effort to amuse herself, she starts sticking her nose into the lives of people around her. But as this starts to get her into trouble, she starts realizing she needs to find a better way to spend her time and ease her boredom.

That's when she discovers larping. :-D

The dream didn't say how-- maybe in the course of her nosing --but I know she stumbles into a game by mistake and finds it fascinating to watch it work and how the story unfolds through play. Here she can watch lives go on without invading anyone's privacy. She is fascinated and she wants in. At her request to join in, the local gaming community doesn't know what to make of a high-society grandmother who wants to start larping, but they let her try and they assign a boy to her (I think his name was Mike?) to sort of help her through things. Mike was initially resistant to the idea of some old lady playing games, but I think he is eventually impressed by some kind of natural aptitude she had for gaming.

The dream was structured strangely; I think it jumped from her discovery of gaming to several years down the line when she is now a longtime member of the community, and Mike is still a kid but now older now and still hangs around her because they have bonded, probably in a surrogate grandmother-grandson way.

It was almost like the pilot for a television show about how she makes this new culture part of her life. I think I'd change her name, for some reason I don't think Leona fits her. Maybe to something similar like Leah. I think she immerses herself in many aspects of geek culture and has to learn what that new world is like. I imagine the fact that she's spent her whole life being part of the attractive popular respected in-crowd, from youth to the age she is now, means she has to work to understand that so much of the geek crowd have issues with feeling awkward and like outsiders. And how she's the weird lady who dresses up in costumes to do weird things with her strange friends to many of the people in her social circle. Also, in the dream she was more interested in writing and running games than being in them. I feel like she needs to do both, because you can't really be good at running or writing unless you've gotten experience from the inside. So I think she would have to start by playing, and it probably adds more diverse things to the story if she does both.

I have no idea what I could do with this, but I enjoyed the dream and I find the idea very interesting.
