Friday night at Intercon I ran my most recent game, Brockhurst, a Downton Abbey-inspired larp that ties into my greater Breaking History universe written in collaboration with Bernie. I was a bit nervous, due to some weird issues the first run had at last year's Festival. There were some problems with power dynamics, and certain players had a hard time getting into their characters. There was some indication that it was out-of-game stuff affecting it, or bad casting matches, rather than nececessary fatal design flaws with those parts of the game, but you can't be sure with only one run. So after some thought, I decided I wasn't going to edit the game in any substantial way, in order to have another data point for assessing what needs work.

I'm glad to say I think things went really well, certainly better than the first. I even think we may have achieved a full cast that had fun, even if maybe not everybody loving every minute. Certainly nobody brought any problems to me, though certain plots went better or worse than they did last time. The villain roles were yet again cast with very clever people, who damn near ate the whole game, but not to the point where their opposites felt like they had no agency. [livejournal.com profile] bronzite was also a huge help. I shouldn't have been surprised, as Bernie told me it was like this when he ran it last time, but he ended up occupied with manning the telegram message-sending system pretty much the entire time. He did a great job with it, and it was a big weight off of me to know that it was being handled so well.

I made two small tweaks to the way I ran things, both of which were suggested by previous players, and I think they helped. First, I made an announcement at the end of briefing that even though everybody is roleplaying bosses and servants, people should not abuse that power dynamic. Nobody has the right to boss anybody else around, and nobody has to take orders they don't want to take. We're here to have fun, so don't be a jerk. I think it helped, as it didn't seem to ever be a problem. The other thing was I had the dancing happen first. I was told it might help mix the players who might otherwise might not find reason to blend. Again, I think it helped, maybe even with keeping the upstairs and downstairs people on a more equal footing as the tone of the Servant's Ball dictates.

The game needs a little editing, but not nearly as much as I was worried it might. There are still a handful of character who could probably use a little more. No character is thin, in my opinion, but it's such a high-plot game that some characters a bit light by comparison. So I could use maybe an extra plot or two. Also, I think I need to make some evidence of the various mysteries that cannot be destroyed. A consistent problem is that when the villains are clever, they can fairly easily conceal all signs of their misdeeds such that the characters on their trail will never get a hold of them. Not exactly sure how to do that, but it's a direction for the edit. Maybe I'll be able to get that done in time for the Festival run. At any rate, I was really pleased by how happy the players seemed to be, which made me feel more secure in the game.

I wanted to make sure you all heard about [livejournal.com profile] bronzite's project on Kickstarter, a new hard sci fi game called "Slower Than Light"!

The link to the Kickstarter is here if you want to support it! I did, and so should you!

Am now back from my lovely weekend of larping at SLAW. This was kind of my weekend of "games I am not sure about," since in an effort to expand my larping horizons I signed up for all games that were not to my typical inclining. By and large this tactic was a success, and I had a very good weekend overall.

Friday night Charlotte, April, and I all played in Martha Stewart's Guide to Interdimensional Summoning (and Basting a Turkey.) Fortunately Charlotte had reminded me just before the game that it actually took place at a party and not at a business conference like I originally assumed, so at the last minute I changed my costuming plan. I thought I looked quite nice, wearing my black asymmetric cocktail dress with my white gold anniversary necklace, the nearly-matching silver infinity earrings, silver pumps with the perfectly-matching silver bag, and my silver-gray pashmina over my shoulders. Though I had a good time in it, this game was not to my taste. It was a game purely about schmoozing, with most interactions conducted solely for their own sake, which is totally fine, I just tend to prefer a little bit more plot. I did end up bonding with the demon who had been my childhood imaginary friend, but I did it mostly as a favor to him-- he needed it and I didn't, which I think may have been a common thing about demons and humans in the game. Glad I tried the game, had a nice time, but it was not exactly what I was hoping for.

Saturday morning I drove Charlotte and Ryan in early so that they could play in their morning games. I had nothing in that slot, so I decided to go cruise a nearby thrift store. It was a very nice, well-organized Goodwill, and there were lots of stuff to choose from. Unfortunately most of the things that caught my eye weren't in my size, but I find it amusing how often even in the thrift stores my eye is drawn to items from Express. Very frequently I see something I like the cut and styling of among lots of random pieces on the rack, and when I check the tag, Express is the maker with surprising frequency. I ended up taking home a fantastic black sweater with a drapey fold-over collar, two dressy knee-length skirts, one with an orange and white cloudy pattern and the other with swirls in various shades of red, and the neatest thing of all, a low-sided oval pan with a copper bottom and a stainless steel interior. It needs polishing, but this pan that looks just like it is selling for hundreds of dollars, and I snagged this one for four. Score! I'm not sure what you would call such a thing-- it's oval kind of like a gratin pan but only has one long handle, and the sides are too low for a saute pan --but I look forward to shining it up and cooking with it, which will promptly require shining it again. :-)

Pleased with my haul, I returned to WPI to grab lunch and get into costume for The Sound of Drums. I wasn't sure if it was going to be my cup of tea, and I was fairly certain I would like Two Hours in London, but [livejournal.com profile] natbudin had highly recommended it and I trust the man's judgment. So, in the spirit of the Try New Games weekend, I went for it. My costume wasn't terrible, but it was weaker than my usual standard. Despite playing a sixty-plus-year-old, I did end up wearing my brown tribal-looking bikini with my brown pashmina tied around my waist like a skirt, and Charlotte kindly lent me her huge patterned green scarf to wrap around my shoulders. This mostly concealed all the decidedly-not-sixty-year-old body in the bikini, and I made some attempt to paint age makeup on my face, but I didn't white my hair and overall looked pretty much like the vain twenty-something I am. Also, I think I lost my brown and white headband scarf at the gamespace afterward, which I am annoyed with myself about.

But the game itself was excellent. The world is very full and well-thought-out. I loved my character and was incredibly busy throughout the whole game. I also had great interactions with Susan, who was my brilliant-but-mad younger sister, and Ryan, who was the troubled outsider with the haunting in his soul. I even got to use my badass spiritual strength to beat up a fallen god! It was awesome. The culture they built, with its ways and its norms that were so different and unusual, was really well-made. There was one small instance of "Christianity as the great bogeyman of non-mainstream living" that irked me, but otherwise I thought they did a really nice job of establishing the foreign people. There was also lots of interesting story told, which pretty much makes any game for me. Overall, I think this was my favorite larp of the weekend, and the one I was most glad that I took a chance on. Congrats to Tory and Lily for making it!

Saturday night was Clarence. By this point I was really dragging, energy-wise. This weekend marks the third week in a row of little sleep and poor eating, and I think I am reaching my limit. Luckily for me, Clarence is a game that is impossible to screw up, and I was playing an AGM so I could afford to be reactive rather than active. Fortunately, others were doing a fantastic job of pushing the game along. This run was blackbagged and carried off over the shoulder by [livejournal.com profile] electric_d_monk, whose portrayal of the fanatically German-nationalist GM Bucher drove the events by sheer force of personality. By the end of the run, we had vampires passing on their nationalities as well as their vampirism, resulting in [livejournal.com profile] bronzite's General and [livejournal.com profile] rigel's Carmilla being determined to be genetically perfect Aryans who of course must then go on to spawn the Master Race. With the use of the time accelerator to hasten their growth, soon we had six little Ubermensches prancing about named after the Von Trapp children singing songs from The Sound of Music. And naturally, these unstoppable German supermen went on to take over the world and some surrounding planets, leaving Brewer as Kaiser of the Earth and Mars. It was a typically insane run, but the birth of the Master Race, I think, was a uniquely amusing touch.

"Allow me to explain zee rules of Der Kriegspiel."

Sunday [livejournal.com profile] lightgamer was nice enough to let me ride over with him and [livejournal.com profile] twilighttremolo. I was signed up for In the Jungle that day, the final game of the sort I wasn't sure what I'd think of. But I like the work of [livejournal.com profile] emp42ress and [livejournal.com profile] simplewordsmith, so I wanted to see what it was like. My costume was like most of my others this weekend was a little half-assed, since I tend not to keep worn-out clothes around, but I settled on an outfit that when my parents last saw me in it told me I looked like a bum. I figured that would work. It is a game about hobos, a pure conversation exercise where we do nothing more than talk to each other in character. The game was at bare minimum cast, but it was a good one, including myself, [livejournal.com profile] natbudin, [livejournal.com profile] rigel, [livejournal.com profile] nyren, [livejournal.com profile] beholdsa, and [livejournal.com profile] electric_d_monk. Being in it with such good larpers helped a lot, keeping the converstion interesting and helping ease some of the awkwardness I was feeling about just having to spitball. Not something I'm certain I want to do again any time soon, but I enjoyed the experiment in this instance and I'm glad I decided to give it a try.

Now I am exhausted. I have been going at a breakneck pace for the last three weeks and I simply can't go any more. I have been kind of hoping that if I have one day where I sleep really well and eat properly it will fix my weariness and the mess my digestive system has been in, but I think I need a more consistent effort to really fix things up. Wednesday I will be going home for Thanksgiving with my brother, and I'm hoping to reset myself over that break with healthy eating and enough rest. I have things I need to get done in the near future, such as writing more Resonance characters and getting out the casting questionnaire for The Stand, but as cool as my activites have been, I think my body needs a bit more of a break before it will feel back to normal again.

breakinglight11: (Crawling Dromio)

Yowza, what a weekend. My play opened to satisfaction from director and cast alike. On Saturday before the show I had a lovely afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] bronzite, including getting to meet his dad and take a nice leisurely walk around Medfield. There was a pretty heavy rainful during call time, so we elected to go into our rainspace, which at least had the benefit of no bugs and air conditioning. To my pleasure I saw that Bernie, [livejournal.com profile] laurion, and Amanda were in attendance as well, and though we didn't get the impression the audience totally followed this somewhat dense and talky play, we the cast were pleased.

Sunday was the pre-show picnic. I must say, it was one of the best-planned picnics I've ever been to, and the company was great. I mentioned I've had bad experiences with potlucks in the past, so when I discovered that everyone had brought something not only delicious but often more elaborate than they'd initially offered, I was floored with delight. We had so many delicious dishes, and it was a good thing too, because I think we had fifteen-- [livejournal.com profile] electric_d_monk, [livejournal.com profile] captainecchi, [livejournal.com profile] natbudin, Michael, Bernie, [livejournal.com profile] blendedchaitea, [livejournal.com profile] readerofposts, Emily, Marissa, Marissa's boyfriend Matt, [livejournal.com profile] morethings5, [livejournal.com profile] in_water_writ, John, Walter, am I forgetting anyone? --lovely people in attendance. It was a somewhat eclectic group, with friends from several different parts of my life, but I think even so everyone got along and had a good time. I unfortunately had to withdraw for a phone call related to a serious family issue (it may be time to finally make a post explaining what's going on there) but I thoroughly enjoyed what time I had with everyone. And the fact that my gang understood the show well enough to laugh at appropriate times made a huge improvement with the audience! Yay for my smart, Shakespeare-getting friends!

And yesterday I was fortunate enough to get to see [livejournal.com profile] youareverysmall, my dearest friend from back home, while she and her girlfriend were in the Boston area. I had them over for dinner-- they're vegetarian, so I busted out my cooking-for-veggies standby, the artichoke pie --and got to enjoy her company and meet her girlfriend Samantha, who I am pleased to say is cute, smart, stylish, and extremely well-spoken. I approve. ;-) They very politely listened to me talk about geeky things, and a lovely evening was certainly had.

Now I am weary. I look forward to spending the next several days doing nothing at all. I really need the downtime, after as crammed as schedule as I've had for the last two weeks. And Jared has an interview today. I have my fingers crossed, and anything else crossable on me, and I'm saying a little prayer for him.

Had a lovely dinner party last night in the charming company of [livejournal.com profile] natbudin, [livejournal.com profile] captainecchi, and [livejournal.com profile] electric_d_monk. I settled on making Italian crusted pork chops as the main dish. I breaded them according to my mom's recipe, using a mixture of panko, parmesan, and Italian herbs, then threw them in a saute pan to brown. To my dismay, all the breading came off in the pan, probably because I forgot to flour the chops before the dipped them in the egg mixture. So when I placed the chops in the baking dish to finish in the oven, I scraped the lost breading out of the pan and sprinkled it over the meat. I then made up a new panko-cheese-herb mixture and shook it over them to create a new crust. This I finished with a drizzle of melted butter, then baked. They came out with a nice golden crust that way, and the slightly more well-done bits that browned in the saute pan complexified the flavor. I would like to try this same recipe doing it the way I'm supposed to sometime, but I liked how it came out even with my mistake. Also, the company was lovely, and did a great deal to make me feel better after the stress of the last few weeks. Must be certain to feed them well on a regular basis, to encourage them to make the long drive out this way again!

Was very productive this morning. I put the chicken for the picnic tomorrow in bags of marinade in preparation for cooking, cleaned the whole kitchen including mopping the floor, and folded and put away a load of laundry. Shortly I will be leaving for Medfield to have lunch with [livejournal.com profile] bronzite before opening day of my show. He sadly cannot make the picnic, so we'll spend some time together today instead. I am looking forward to putting on our first real performance, though I am quite certain I will crash afterward. My plan is to pour all my energy into a good performance, then go home and chill, doing nothing more strenuous than chopping vegetables for potato salad for tomorrow. If I can make it through those things satisfactorily, it will have been a very good day.
breakinglight11: (Unsteady Fool)
There is something on my mind right now that I do not feel comfortable talking about, but am feeling very anxious to deal with with the person in question. But I'm not sure what the most appropriate way to do it is. Phone, IM, in person? I don't know yet. At the very least, I must set up an appointment of some kind to do so, and soon. So you get random thoughts from a slightly distracted brain.

I'm so honored to have been asked by Nat, Susan, and Vito to help write the first Alleged Entertainment weekend-long game. I am now officially a member of Alleged Entertainment. I feel good about that.

I now have four games to my credit. Alice and Oz, both four-hours, I wrote by myself, under my own banner, Breaking Light. Paranoia: Research and Dismemberment, another four-hour, was written with Bernie Gabin, Joe Gabin, Matt Kamm, and Mac Magruder, under the banner of Will Not Be Denied, a reference I commend you if you get. And now one weekend-long with Alleged. I am proud of this.

I am surprised to find that in Labor Wars I was actually hoping that some of the replacement characters would be needed. I never felt that way before.

We had some fantastic players in this run. I am amused at how frequently in larps [livejournal.com profile] bronzite is either the one holding back the oncoming tide of darkness, or the one bringing it. I thought [livejournal.com profile] londo was going to be screwed, but he ended up more successful than almost anyone. One person I met this weekend, Shoshana, was a last-minute drop replacement who turned out to be fantastic in the part. I was so pleased with so many.

There are pictures of varying quality now up on Facebook. We should be having another run this coming fall, for those of you interested in playing.

Now I want to write another game. :-)
breakinglight11: (Puck 5)

I found out today that my mother woke up to a wet nose snuffling against hers. :-) That Merlin generates the most interesting news!

Today turned out to be significantly busier than I expected it to be, but overall was quite pleasant. This summer, since [livejournal.com profile] nennivian and [livejournal.com profile] aurora_knight will not be moving in yet, we will have a couple of subletters, once of which is the lovely [livejournal.com profile] blendedchaitea. She will be going home to Los Angeles for two weeks before she officially comes to stay with us, so today I helped her gather up her dorm room, pack it into our respective cars, and store in against the wall downstairs until she needs it again. It turned out all that carrying was one hell of a workout; I must have walked miles with my arms loaded with heavy stuff. My muscles feel pretty ripped up, but it's actually a pretty good feeling, since it's been so long since I got a real workout.

In regards to my personal housing-related interests and responsibilities, I got one out of the two communications I was hoping for today. I was told that [livejournal.com profile] bronzite's furniture is supposed to be delivered between 8AM and 12PM tomorrow. I'm glad to know, but that's a bit earlier than I was hoping; it's earlier than I get up for work. Ah, well, God knows with how I've been sleeping I'll be up by that time anyway. As to the other communication, I didn't get the e-mail I was hoping for saying I can pick up the table. I'm hoping it will come tomorrow in time for me to make the trip to get it.

breakinglight11: (Stiff Fool)

Sleep yet eludes me. I drop like a felled tree in the evening, wake up three or four times a night, and feel like a zombie the next morning. I'm chalking it up to stress; I've never really been a problem sleeper before. I've got to give that melatonin another try. I think it made a difference; if I recall, I slept better for a couple nights with it and forgot all about taking it, and ended up right back where I started with the bad night's sleep.

We cast The Labor Wars last night. I must say, it was a fascinating experience to glimpse into the Alleged Entertainment system of casting. Unlike most other casting sessions I've seen, they've devised a way to assign value to each answer and use those values to objectively measure compatibility with a character. It's very well-thought-out, and yet they balance it well with using non-quantified answers and knowledge of players to optimizes the matches. I'm really pleased with the cast that was put together last night, and I hope the players are too. Expect character sheets very soon!

I think I have a lead on a decent kitchen table. It's pretty much what I was looking for and very decently priced, so I'm hoping that I get a response to the e-mail I sent this morning confirming that I was interested. With any luck, the seller will get back to me soon and I'll be able to use my free time this weekend to go pick it up. Also, according to the shipping tracking on my kitchen cart, that is set to arrive on the 17th. It would very much please me to have these two household items in order.

In regards to furniture for another dwelling, this Saturday I will also be helping out [livejournal.com profile] bronzite on a related matter. He is in Germany right now but has a furniture delivery scheduled for this weekend, so I will be waiting at his place to let the movers in and deliver the pieces to their proper locations. I'm still waiting for them to call me with the delivery time, so I don't have to be there all day. I guess I could do that if I had to, but I'd prefer not to have to bring quite so much to entertain myself with as would be required in that situation.

breakinglight11: (Cavalier Fool)

On Friday night I helped [livejournal.com profile] captainecchi and [livejournal.com profile] electric_d_monk run the fantastic League of Extraordinary Hogwarts Students. I loved playing this game, and I only wish I'd had time to study everything more carefully. I read all the character sheets and the rules, but  I still wasn't quite familiar with the inner workings of the game to be all that useful as a GM. I mostly got answers from Matt and Lise and then passed them on to players. I was particularly proud of [livejournal.com profile] katiescarlett29, who stepped in as Irene Adler even though she wasn't totally confident about the improv part of larping, and of [livejournal.com profile] nennivian, who I always thought was a larper waiting to happen. By and large the run went very well, with lots of activity and engaged players, but I wish I'd been intimate enough with the game to be able to give better suggestions to the couple of (usually new) players that got stuck. I wanted to talk to them after the game, but I was so blasted by gamewrap that I had to drag myself home and sleep. I have been sleeping badly lately, and I had to get up for a 9AM game the next day.

Saturday morning that 9AM game was the fifth run of Oz. It was an excellent run, one of the best, with the capable assistance of Jared and Bernie as my fellow GMs. We were a little nervous about the casting in places, but it turned out that everyone had a part they enjoyed. Standout players include the awesome [livejournal.com profile] natbudin, who we initially wanted for EVERY ROLE IN THE GAME, but we finally settled into a part because he wanted to see him portray the personality-- which he did amazingly. Again, Charlotte was fantastic, showing so much talent for getting into and becoming characters. I was incredibly impressed with [livejournal.com profile] wired_lizard, who played the character the way I had always imagined it to be, and gave me a few new ideas on top of that. Zachariah came up with some fantastically clever stratagies for executing his fairly difficult plotline. Hell, pretty much everyone in the game did an excellent job. I should probably stop casting [livejournal.com profile] bronzite as my big bad, because I think people expect him to be the villain all the time, and so no one is inclined to trust him. In the previous run of Oz, Marc Blumberg as the villain did very well and in fact managed to achieve his goal of cataclysmic destruction, but it was more because the characters he was in opposition to made a fatal error that they could not fix. John actually pushed things farther along the doom track than anyone so far, but his opposition managed to repair it properly. I was immensely pleased with this run.

Saturday afternoon, I went home to sleep. I think it helped a little, but I was still pretty draggy for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday night was the fifth run of Alice, again assisted by Jared and Bernie. I think it went well in that players had a good time, but this was the WEIRDEST RUN EVER. Though of course there have been variations, the previous four runs tended to follow some pretty clear trends. Basically, there is a pattern of connections that is supposed to get made, and with some variance in the order in previous runs they all came together, leading to an endgame scenario where two large groups are polarized against each other. A lot of those connections did not click this time around, and I'm not sure where the broken link was. The villain was vanquished again, but not by the person who is supposed to and always has in the past. In all the previous runs, either the core villain group acted so covertly that nobody knew who they were until the end of the game, or they formed a tight-knit group so cohesive that they just overwhelmed and crushed all opposition. I feel like they were more scattered and freewheeling this time around, which made them more obvious and less able to protect themselves should someone decide they were a target. There were still some fantastic performances-- I loved Lise's analytical approach to her character and she made amazing process putting together the pieces of her challenge. And April was excellent, not to mention wearing a fantastic costume. I guess any game where the players have fun is a success, but I was really shocked at how weirdly this run went.

Then I went home to sleep. Again, my sleep has not been terribly restful these days, so still. So. Draggy. Blah.

Sunday was Diamond Geezers, the only thing I played. I had a blast. I was playing an ex-military demolitions expert whose rough, ruthless, but not terribly malicious outlook I enjoyed. It was an interestingly set-up game, basically us in a confined space with a few story hooks built in but a plot that was more or less on rails. I wasn't exactly expecting that, but it was a really fun character game, involving yelling in Cockney accents and waving guns around. We experienced an odd phenomenon that I think was troubling Brad as GM that the only ones who were talking much, at least at first, were [livejournal.com profile] bleemoo, Charlotte, and myself, and everyone else was fairly quiet. I wonder if it was because the three of us were comfortable doing the accent and they felt slightly intimindated to speak if they couldn't. It's not like mine was any good at all, though Josh's and Charlotte's actually were. Josh was so much fun to play off of, and Charlotte continued to prove my theory that she has always been a larper, whether she knew it or not. Definitely recommend this game as a fun silly character experience.

Oh, as a side note, I was amused at [livejournal.com profile] usernamenumber pointing how at Brandeis, of course there was going to be less shooting and killing and more hand-holding and agreeing to work things out. :-) I have noticed this trend myself.

Next year I shall be con chair. I am looking forward to it. I am in the process of pondering a few thing to help optimize, which I will record when I have a better handle on my thoughts. Until then, thanks to everyone for making our very own con a fantastic experience again!

breakinglight11: (Crawling Dromio)

God, I cannot focus today. Had a ton of work waiting for me upon getting back from my trip home, and though I'm making myself get through it, the brain, she is not there. I am especially annoyed that in my absent state I forgot the tasty leftovers I was intending to have for lunch today on my desk at home, wrapped in their convenient travel-ready package. :-P Bernie and I made steaks for dinner last night using the Alton Brown method, which is unorthodox but quite good.

In regards to my musing about the problem of so many unfilled games at Festival-- in case you haven't seen it already, [livejournal.com profile] bronzite pointed out that this year's Festival has more quite a few more slots for players than the previous year's did. And while we managed to fill more than we did last year, there are just TOO MANY extra slots even for the increased number of players. Some numbers crunched by [livejournal.com profile] natbudin also indicate that while we are growing at least a bit every year, but have mostly leveled off. And the number of people who played the previous year but didn't this year lends some likelihood to the idea that there are no new games for them to play. I'm so lucky to have friends who are smarter than me and think to look at the metrics that matter. :-) Though to be honest I was inclined to look at those player counts myself, I just felt too guilty to spend the time on it when I had real work I was supposed to be doing. Anyway, this is good data to have for planning next year. Maybe shoot for a target number of slots somewhere a little higher than last year to account for a small amount of growth, but not quite so high as this year so as to be able to fill games.

breakinglight11: (Pleading Fool)

Yesterday I got back to Allentown for Easter, but it turned out to be more complicated than I thought. My train got cancelled due to flooding in Rhode Island, so at the last minute my dad got me on a flight that was technically full. I begged a ride early the same morning to the airport from the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] bronzite, to which I am very grateful for going out of his way. I managed to get home, had a lovely and enormous meal with my parents, and went to bed at around 10PM. Travel always takes it out of me.

Tomorrow we will be going out to an Easter brunch, but today will just be low-key. I have to arrange a time to sit down with Jared (though it will have to be over the phone) to cast Alice and Oz. I want to get the sheets out as soon as possible-- it seemed like the whole process of Festival this year started a lot closer to the date of the con, so I don't want to lose any more time.

breakinglight11: (Puck 3)

It's a rainy old day. Sigh. I dislike bad weather in general, especially on days when I have a fair bit of driving to do, and it's looking like it's going to last all day.

I have a number of errands to run today. I'm trying to get together with [livejournal.com profile] bronzite for lunch since I haven't seen him in a while. Then I must hit Main Street to deposit a check and mail back the daggers from Julius Caesar to the company they were rented from. I also wouldn't mind getting over to the mall today. Lord and Taylor sent me a nice coupon, and maybe I could find something to take home with me for my mother for her birthday. I think I also might enjoy some aimless wandering around the mall; it's been a while since I've had any real leisure time out of the house.

I did not use my free evening yesterday as well as I'd hoped to. I spent most of it napping until I finally threw away the pretense and went to bed for real around ten-thirty. I had hoped to accomplish a bit more with my time, like finishing Labor Wars character sheets. But I've been feeling tired pretty constantly all this past week, and to be honest this is the first morning in a while I don't really feel draggy, so maybe all that sleep let me finally escaped that slump. I did get my laundry folded and put away, as well as some other small household chores, so that's something at least. After my errands today I want to get back on chore track, though. The house needs a good cleaning, and I haven't had any time before now. I hate making the place spotless just before I go home for a while (no time to enjoy it but plenty of time for remaining roommates to mess it back up :-P) but it's just not comfortable, and tomorrow I'm having dinner guests. Also I am determined to finish my two sheets for The Labor Wars meeting on Thursday. At the stage I'm at right now that is totally doable, I just have to buckle down.

So, due to a need to bolster numbers, I have agreed to play horde in GM Space this Sunday. I wasn't planning on doing anything more than watching due to how packed the rest of my weekend is going to be, but they need a few extra bodies to torment the GMs, so I agreed to help out. I'm actually kind of excited to get to play horde in that game. I was cast in my run, and while I really liked it, the horde is so funny in this game that I was actually a little jealous of them at times. This will make up for it.

Having [livejournal.com profile] bronzite over for dinner tonight. I haven't cooked for him in a long time, so I'm looking forward to it. I'm now trying to figure out what to make. Usually I would use his company as an excuse to make something trayf, but since it's still Lent I'm keeping kosher too. Ah, well, I'll figure something out. We shall have a nice dinner, and then he will run off to Pre-con. I sadly will not be attending Pre-con, since I have work Friday morning and don't really want to drive out and drive back tonight.

And now I have returned from my Christmas vacation at home. Yesterday's trip was the first time I ever made the long drive from Allentown, Pennsylvania back up to Boston; usually my brother handles the driving, but he wasn't coming back yet and so couldn't come with me. I'm kind of proud of myself, given I've never driven anywhere that far and I kind of, you know, despise driving. :-) But Constantine and I have made it safely back. I probably drove a little faster than I should have, but the trip was five and a half hours as it was, to say nothing of what it might have been if I'd gone slower.

The trip was made immensely more pleasant by the Sherlock Holmes audiobook I listened to on the way. All stories I was already very familiar with, but I always enjoy them. My interest has been reawakened by the new movie that has just come out, and tonight I will be seeing the film with [livejournal.com profile] bronzite. It will be lovely to spend time with him again. I am a longtime Sherlock Holmes fan, but I must take care to remind myself that one must not be too married to one's perception of the literature when seeing it transferred to film.

Had the day off today, but still, very busy. Today included running errands for Jared, getting the last costume piece I needed for the weekend, finalizing Oz, and working on the last major task left for Paranoia.

Almost ready for SFS Live Action Weekend. Costumes are chosen, only must be packed. Oz is pretty much finished. Paranoia is extremely close; only a few more editing jobs remain, and the game has become so much tighter and more polished for it. The ride situation has been organized, though it was no easy task. Just have to get my stuff in order, and then I will be ready to go.

On another gaming note, Oz filled for Intercon J, huzzah! I'm among impressive company too, seeing how few other games are full at this early point. I even got lovely people from Chicago in, including the wonderful David Cave and Marc Blumberg. The only thing I'm sorry about is that [livejournal.com profile] bronzite is on the waitlist. I really want him to play. But he's number one, and the first person almost always gets into the game eventually. I myself used my signup this time to be first on the waitlist for Supervillain Academy, the work of Marc Blumberg that Jared says is fantastic. I'll probably get in, and if I have no morning game, that's not the end of the world.

At last, after probably the most difficult and problematic build I have ever been involved with, we finished with the Romeo and Juliet set, and have had our opening night. I am absolutely exhausted-- I was there almsot twelve hours a day the last three days. But the show went off well, and I was pleased and proud of everyone; our audience even included [info]bronzite, which made me happy. My parents and Jared's are coming tonight, so let's hope we do even better. I'm particularly proud of Xavier, our Romeo, who like Jared who came before him went out for a show having never acted before in his freshman year, got the lead, and carried a show his first time out. Also, Jonathan Plesser gets better with every show-- it's really got me interested in him as an actor. This cast actually did something impressive in that that even with as little rehearsal time as we had, they were ready at the start of tech week and even adapted to playing on the set almost immediately. I plan on spending some time with my mom and dad this afternoon, having an early dinner, and then finding my way over to the theater by call time.

I had an fun and unusual experience yesterday-- I filmed a briefing for [info]bronzite's next Battletech campaign in the character of one of his NPCs. I really enjoyed the whole process. I've only done a little bit of on-camera acting, most of which was for my silly internship, and it usually didn't give us enough time to learn our lines well enough, or do enough takes to really get it right. This was a simple setup that with a little creativity on our part we worked out pretty well, and I feel pretty good about my performance. I'm very excited to see the finished product, once [info]zapf films the part of the lecherous pirate on whom my Wolf Guards are declaring war. :-) We will crush you, you space scum! I also got to keep my costume, a neat-looking olive-drab coat that is quite cozy. I feel kinda guilty about accepting it, as Bronzite bought it expressly for the purpose of the shoot, but as he put it, it was exactly going to fit him. So, thank you, sir, very generous of you. I hope of those you who are in this campaign enjoy my portrayal. :-)

At long last I'm going to get to play in the Iron GM-winning game written by [info]bronzite, [info]londo, [info]elenuial, and Eager Mike, (am I forgetting anyone? [info]nyren?) A Midsummer Night and the Living is Easy. I've wanted to play in this game ever since the contest when they wrote it; I love the premise, and I have since heard so many good reviews from players that I am crazy excited. It's going to be running late on Friday night of WPI's Gaming Weekend, and thus far [info]lightgamer has agreed to make a trip of it with me. I'm trying to get [info]jh1230 to come as well, and Ryan or [info]linearequation if they can make it, and make a little Brandeis contingent of it. I don't love the timeslot of 11PM to 1AM, especially since it's a forty-five minute drive to get there, but with a group I won't mind. I've been running so much lately it feels like I haven't played in a larp in forever, so that'll be a nice change of pace.

I am excited to see what Midsummer elements have gotten into the game. As you know I just played Puck, so I have an affinity for that character, but they'd probably cast a guy as Puck anyway if he's in there. I don't know if they're casting at the door or what, but if that's the case, given the film-noir aesthetic I know what I'm going to wear-- black cocktail dress that I wore as Wendy Noyes in the MCR2K, elbow-length black gloves (wanted opera-length, couldn't find them), black stockings with garters, and if I can get a hold of a cigarette holder, so much the better. Hmm. I feel like I need a diaphanous wrap or something, preferably in white for accent but black would work too. Wonder if I could find one on short notice.

Yesterday was opening night for Macbeth, and the show went very well. We had a decent-sized audience, and I was honored by the presence of Bernie, [info]bronzite, and [info]ninja_report among them. Bernie brought me gorgeous yellow-orange roses, and the four of us went out for a lovely dinner afterward. An excellent evening all around. I hope to see more of you there, though I gather more of you are coming next weekend than this.

Yesterday we also finally have our fifth housemate at Elsinore with us with the moving in of Ryan. I was sorry I wasn't around to greet him or help him with anything when he arrived, I was already at call, but he's not fully moved in yet, so I hope I can make myself useful at some point during the process.
