Apparently I feel like telling funny stories about my stuff lately!

Today I was asked where the name I use online, and as a sort of "company" name for myself, Breaking Light, came from. I use it to represent myself because I like the sound of it-- for some reason "break" and variations thereof are among my favorite words --and because it has some meaning that's important to me. I see it as evocative of light that bursts through the darkness, a nice metaphor for hope, a concept I've struggled with for a lot of my recent life.

But as to how the actual words first occurred to me? They're a mishearing of a lyric in a Scott Stapp song.

...yeah.

For those who quite understandably don't know who that is, Scott Stapp is the former lead vocalist of a band called Creed. This band no longer exists, and seem to be best known for their weird undertone of Christian rock religiosity and the exceptionally melodramatic character to both their lyrics and the particular performance style Mr. Stapp brought to their songs. Seeing as my taste in music is flatly terrible, of course I kind of liked them and still have a couple of their songs in my iPod. My dear [livejournal.com profile] youareverysmall mocked me mercilessly for it back in the day, as was right and proper, and there's still one song I can't hear without imagining them imitating the ridiculous singing style.

So upon the breakup of Creed, our main man Scott embarked on a solo career, which I gather was not terribly successful as nobody knows who he is outside of Creed. But he released an album where the title track had a fair bit of play on the radio, so while you probably wouldn't know it by name, you might recognize the sound of it if you heard it. I spend a lot of time in the gym, which always tends to constantly have pop stations playing, where I recognized the voice and of course my awful musical tastes kicked in. I found it pleasing enough to pay attention to the song, which is called "The Great Divide." But because Stapp's voice singing voice sounds like he's midway through a transformation into a werewolf, his diction is not always the best. And I misheard "the great divide" in the chorus as "the breaking light," which immediately fired my imagination, and stayed with me to the point where I've adopted it as my branding.

Honestly this happens to me fairly frequently, where I think I hear a song lyric as something that I think is really cool, but it turns out I didn't hear it accurately. But that turns out to be even better, because then it's MINE now, and I'm not stealing from the song. Like in this case, where I got a cool expression!

So, yes. I chose my name from an inaccurate perception of a song in the unremarkable solo career of the former lead singer of an awful Christian rock band. Inspiring!

Yowza, what a weekend. My play opened to satisfaction from director and cast alike. On Saturday before the show I had a lovely afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] bronzite, including getting to meet his dad and take a nice leisurely walk around Medfield. There was a pretty heavy rainful during call time, so we elected to go into our rainspace, which at least had the benefit of no bugs and air conditioning. To my pleasure I saw that Bernie, [livejournal.com profile] laurion, and Amanda were in attendance as well, and though we didn't get the impression the audience totally followed this somewhat dense and talky play, we the cast were pleased.

Sunday was the pre-show picnic. I must say, it was one of the best-planned picnics I've ever been to, and the company was great. I mentioned I've had bad experiences with potlucks in the past, so when I discovered that everyone had brought something not only delicious but often more elaborate than they'd initially offered, I was floored with delight. We had so many delicious dishes, and it was a good thing too, because I think we had fifteen-- [livejournal.com profile] electric_d_monk, [livejournal.com profile] captainecchi, [livejournal.com profile] natbudin, Michael, Bernie, [livejournal.com profile] blendedchaitea, [livejournal.com profile] readerofposts, Emily, Marissa, Marissa's boyfriend Matt, [livejournal.com profile] morethings5, [livejournal.com profile] in_water_writ, John, Walter, am I forgetting anyone? --lovely people in attendance. It was a somewhat eclectic group, with friends from several different parts of my life, but I think even so everyone got along and had a good time. I unfortunately had to withdraw for a phone call related to a serious family issue (it may be time to finally make a post explaining what's going on there) but I thoroughly enjoyed what time I had with everyone. And the fact that my gang understood the show well enough to laugh at appropriate times made a huge improvement with the audience! Yay for my smart, Shakespeare-getting friends!

And yesterday I was fortunate enough to get to see [livejournal.com profile] youareverysmall, my dearest friend from back home, while she and her girlfriend were in the Boston area. I had them over for dinner-- they're vegetarian, so I busted out my cooking-for-veggies standby, the artichoke pie --and got to enjoy her company and meet her girlfriend Samantha, who I am pleased to say is cute, smart, stylish, and extremely well-spoken. I approve. ;-) They very politely listened to me talk about geeky things, and a lovely evening was certainly had.

Now I am weary. I look forward to spending the next several days doing nothing at all. I really need the downtime, after as crammed as schedule as I've had for the last two weeks. And Jared has an interview today. I have my fingers crossed, and anything else crossable on me, and I'm saying a little prayer for him.

Okay, so there's some positive stuff going on with me too, to compensate for how off I'm feeling today. My new rain boots came in a couple of days ago, and I absolutely adore them. They're Sudini Minnas, gorgeous walking boots made of waterproof leather that you can behold in all their glory here, though I got them in black rather than the admittedly equally lovely chocolate. And since I bought them on eBay, I paid a fraction of their retail value. Oh, eBay, how I love you. The hours I spent scouring the Internet really paid off. These boots are beautiful as well as comfortable, and they've held up admirably to the wet of this rainy morning. I am incredibly pleased, so expect to see them often.

Last night there was a GM meeting for The Labors Wars, which went very well and confirmed my enthusiasm for working on this project with this team. I really admire the way Alleged Entertainment builds a framework for the writing process that schedules regular meetings and due dates for when various components need to be written. If I'm ever in charge of organizing a larp writing team, I definitely plan to take a leaf out of their book. The sense of accountability alone it creates is so useful. Particularly since I'm the New Kid writing an AE game, and the least experienced larper/larp writer, I know I certainly don't want to let anyone down. We assigned bluesheet writing last night which is due in two weeks, and I intend to get an early start.

Also, this awesome exchange occurred, about a particularly ornery character:
Me: "I take it that's your pet character?"
Susan: "Yeah, she's my baby."
Pause.
Nat: "Your baby's ugly, Susan."

Finally, [info]youareverysmall's lovely boyfriend Dan is in the area on a bike tour, and he is staying at Elsinore for a few days. The timing is unfortunately pretty terrible, as all the days he's in town I'm booked for ten million prior committments and don't have much in the way of time to hang out with him when he's available. I feel like a lousy host and it's kind of stressing me out. I just hope he's comfortable and has a good time seeing the sights.

Today is the birthday of [profile] youareverysmalland the whole world should wish her unicorns and guacamole and fuzzy hats and other nice things.
breakinglight11: (Sad Fool)
A very happy 21st birthday to [livejournal.com profile] youareverysmall, my very beloved friend, confidant, and all-around beautiful pixie, who I really need to talk to more. Sorry, babe, and happy 21st! I love you!

My tummy hurts. Not sure why. It feels kind of like a stress stomach ache, but I have no reason to feel stressed. Perhaps it's because I'm so busy.

Filmed my bit for the upcoming Home Wizard video parody of the Dark Knight. I made a fairly decent Joker, I think. My voice still isn't all that great, but I've got one more week to work on it before we record most of the dialogue. Those of you who saw me wandering around with green hair yesterday must understand that it was part of my costume. If I hear one more joke about whether the carpet matches the curtains, I'll scream. I switched to hardwood floors, so to speak, years ago, anyway. ;-) I did a good job with the makeup, I think, though I didn't love having to walk through the crowded business school in full getup from the bathroom in which I changed. I'll link you all to it once it goes up.

Got some rather bad news in that I just checked the results of King Lear's request for funding from F-Board. We asked for $3,100, it looks like we got $2,000. This is not good. The number we gave them was inflated, sure, but not by that much. We're going to have to do some serious budgeting if this is in fact all we get. This probably won't be easy, but I'm the treasuer of Hold Thy Peace and I'm pretty good at dealing with money, so I'll make sure we figure out how to make it work.

It occurs to me that my diamond shoes are too tight. Damn it.

I hate it when my internship boss doesn't send us pertinent information until the night before we need it. Since I'm not in class anymore it's not so bad, 'cause I can just do the preparations during the day, but still, it makes planning my time out a lot harder.

Hung out with my friend Ally today, helping her pick out equipment for the pet tortoise she's going to be getting. He's a cute little bugger, a Greek tortoise with a pretty shell and thick stompy legs. Also, did not sacrifice my life to Morrowind, but instead actually made some progress on my one-shot, which I suppose is solid enough at the this point that I can describe it here.

I'm putting together a Vampire: The Requiem adventure to run when I get back to Waltham. At this point it's just a one-shot, but open-ended enough that if I ever get an idea for how to continue it, that will be possible. I'm looking for four to six people to create characters to play in it. It's called "Woodsmen." The premise of this will be that all the players are newly-Embraced vampires who have yet to establish themselves in World of Darkness Boston. You will all respond to an invitation by the Prince of Boston for a chance to do an errand for him that will allow you to introduce yourselves to him and to begin to make names for yourselves. If there is enough interest, I'd be glad to run it more than once, so anyone who might be interested, please let me know.

Hung out with my friend Ally today. I love her, she's one of my best friends in the world and I feel like I can talk to her about anything. We've been kind of out of touch lately because we've both been so busy, but it was great to see her. We watched Daria and talked about stuff. It was really nice.

Made chicken marsala for dinner tonight, and it was delicious. I shall have it make it, and its yummy cousin veal, more often.

Also, when I was in the basement working out, I found in the closet down there my old Advanced Dungeons and Dragons starter kit, the stuff I learned on and my first introduction to the world of roleplaying. The copyright on the box says 1999. My mom found it in a gamestore at the mall one day and thought I might like it. Thus a dork legacy was born. God, it was an awful, totally counterintuitive system, but I'm glad to have had it to turn me on to the gaming I do today.

At least I can still use the dice set.

New Years

Jared's been on a cruise for the last two days, and will be until Sunday. I miss him already; this is the longest we've gone without speaking since we've started dating.

I'm spending New Years Eve with my dear friend Ally, and planning to gorge myself on shrimp. I also discovered a shop that sells red velvet cake ice cream. I love red velvet cake, so this was a fun treat.

I've finally gotten back into the groove of working out. Been alternating days between a two-mile run and an ab workout. I feel better when I'm in a good routine, so I hope I can keep this up when I get back to school.

Chicago

This past weekend I visited Jared in Chicago, and he showed me an absolutely lovely time. Of course, just getting to see him would have made it lovely even if he hadn't taken me all over the city, including the aquarium, the art museum, several excellent restaurants, Chinese acrobats, and fireworks on the lake. :-) I couldn't have been happier, and it goes without saying that I'm crazy about him.

Tomorrow I am going to see a Goo Goo Dolls concert. They're my favorite band in the world, and I'm so excited. I had a hard time finding people to go with me, but my best friend Ally and her boyfriend Dan took pity on me and agreed to keep me company. The ad used practically all my favorite songs, so I'm hoping that's what they'll actually be playing. It'll be fun, though I know there are people I'll be wishing were there with me. You know who you are. :-D

By the way! Guess what I discovered on the GURPS site. Does anyone know the Bunnies and Burrows tabletop RPG? It was discontinued for a long time, but they've rereleased it, and I just bought a copy. It's based off Watership Down, quite possibly my favorite book, and it's really interesting. Maybe I'll run a game of it sometime...

Employed!

Hail and hallelujah, I have finally found a job!

My best friend Ally, who goes to school locally, told me about a new Mexican lunch place that opened up a block away from her college. She's a friendly, adorable sort, who went in there for the great vegetarian menu, and she was like, "I love this place! I love the owner's shirt! Hey, owner, I love your place! I love your shirt! Hey, if I knew somebody who was looking for a summer job, are your hiring?" The owner said yes, so she passed the word along to me, and so I went in. They were actually pretty desperate for help, so they hired me immediately. :-) So I have a job for the summer! And it shouldn't totally suck. I start tomorrow for $7.00 an hour, and I should learn my schedule then too.

Poetry tally as of 5:06PM today:

6 fixed rhyming verse
7 haikus
1 sestina
4 triolets
1 ballad
1 free verse
