A quick and funny creative experiment

I’m trying something new with my MCU fan fic lately. As I’m about to get busy with a new Hawking production cycle, I decided to start something easy and light. It’s a collection of humorous text messages between the cast members of the MCU, in no particular order, on whatever subject comes to mind. It’s not the freshest joke form on the Internet, but it’s basically a chance to play with a new short form style. I’m trying to make the most of the limited, semi-epistolary form to convey character as well as comedy, by coming up with a bit and expressing it in different texting styles that hopefully feel true and specific to the characters. I’m even trying to format it such that it looks like a text message, with the sender’s messages left-oriented and the recipient’s to the right. I’m pretty happy how funny it’s come out so far, and I think it’s off to a good start attracting readers.

Not only is it a creative experiment, it’s also a strategic one. Because they’re so short, I’m trying to come up with a new one every day; at this point I’ve gotten about six days ahead. All that is geared toward posting a new one every day, keeping it constantly updating but still not overwhelming to read. My hope is to gather some new readers with it, who will then be interested enough to check out my other, more substantial MCU work. It’s not uncommon for a popular fic to act as a hit mill, bringing attention to other works in a portfolio.

I know it’s a very different experience than my other fics, so they may not stick around for something that’s so unlike what initially brought them in. But I’m giving it a shot. I’m hoping that if I keep the daily updates going for a while, that will generate attention that might last for a bit. Especially since I’m expecting to get very busy with the next round of shows, it’d be nice to have a little attention on my profile that is self-sustaining for a while.
